Four points of the compass
Update 8/6/08: And the preceding was as sweet a sentiment as what follows, but it couldn't remain.
One thing is clear. As stubborn and independent as I think I am, thank God for the loving counsel of good friends--even when they're wrong.

The guy friend gets the up arrow. He does have a good point.

When your compass lies flat on your palm there is no up, down or sideways.
The guy friend gets the up arrow, as arbitrary as any other point on the round and symmetrical compass rose.
Why exactly does he have a good point? A good thing is worth fighting for. I don't have much, but I wouldn't have anything at all if I ran away from my fears and doubts...and if I hadn't made sacrifices.
But why would we count as sacrifices the small things we do to demonstrate our affection and commitment to those we care about? Why wouldn’t we do these things at the risk of hurting those we care about? This same friend called me a "giver" the other night and he's right--I'm probably unusually predisposed to give of myself to my loved ones. I know it’s more difficult for Her. I know.
